UAW LOCAL 228 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

2008 UAW Local 228 Scholarship Program Application packets will be available beginning Monday, March 3, 2008 at UAW Local 228 between the hours of 8:30 am and 3:30 pm.  Submission deadline is Friday, May 9th 2008 at the close of business - 3:30 pm.  
UAW Local 228 is pleased to announce that scholarships are available to legal dependant children of Local 228 Union members in "good standing" who are active, retired or deceased. All applicants must submit an original type written essay of no more than 500 words regarding

"How in history, have Democrats in office benefited working class families?"

To apply you must be an unmarried child (no more than 25 years of age at the beginning date of the school term), who is a legal dependant of an active, retired or deceased UAW Local 228 member in "good standing".

 * Dependant children are defined as persons who qualify as a federal tax exemption to the member

Applicants must be pursuing post-secondary study at a regionally accredited two-year community or junior college, a four-year college or university, or in a vocational training school accredited by a government or nationally recognized agency.   

2008 graduating high school seniors are also eligible, only if they have applied to or are enrolled in any of the preceding institutions (documentation must accompany application) e.g.. report card, diploma, letter of acceptance, college application etc.).

You are eligible to apply for not more than (1) UAW Local 228 Scholarship in any calendar year. 

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS 

It is recognized that educational levels vary from high school to schools of higher learning, therefore (2) categories have been established from which applicants will be chosen:

 * 2008 Graduating High School Seniors or those students under the age of 21 (at the beginning date of the school term) 

* 21 to 25 years of age (at the beginning date of the school term)  

Each year, the Local 228 Executive Board will determine the scholarship recipients who will receive awards of $500.00 to $750.00.  The total amount of persons to receive a scholarship award will be divided into the amount determined by the Executive Board and each person shall receive an equal amount.

Applicants that have not been awarded a scholarship will be given first priority over the previous year recipients.  

JUDGING

All applicants will remain anonymous until judging is complete. 

A Scholarship Committee consisting of the Education Committee and other members appointed by the local president will determine scholarship winners.

Scoring will be based on the following: general grammar, essay mechanics, sincerity, focus and organization, originality and uniqueness, distinctiveness and judges personal overall evaluation.

Judges' decisions are final.  However, in the case of a tie, the Local 228 President will be the tie- breaker

Winners will be announced after scoring and validation of applicants.

Submission packet must arrive (hand delivered or post marked) by end of business Friday, May 9th, 2008 to the UAW Local 228 Union Hall between the hours of 8:30am to 3:30pm.                

NO EXCEPTIONS!
